The CIPFA Statistical Information Service is running a series of courses aimed at anyone who has to explain or present numbers within their organisation. ‘Simple Communication and Presentation of Figures’ shows how this can be done in an effective and user-friendly way.

New editions available to download from the website now
This year the publication has been divided into two parts in order to publish as much information as early as possible. This publication, Part 1, contains the non-financial figures and Part 2 will contain the financial data and unit costs.

The number of schools in England and Wales reduced by 201 to 24,408 between January 2004 and January 2005. The number of pupils fell by 64,601 (59,153 FTE pupils) over the same period. However, the number of FTE qualified teachers in England increased by 2,117 whereas in Wales the number reduced by 323. The most significant increase in teacher numbers is in the secondary school sector, up by 2,841 FTEs in England. This contrasts with the primary school sector where all areas, other than London, show a reduction.
The latest Highways and Transportation Statistics 2004-05 Actuals is now available to download. The statistics cover authorities' actual expenditure during the 2004-05 year for both revenue and capital. Details include maintenance, road safety and public transport. There is also information on car parking including income from penalties/excess charges.
CIPFA Environmental Health Statistics 2004-05 Actuals is now available to download. Environmental Health is a diverse function that includes certain core functions that aim to 'prevent' the breakdown of public Health and safety. The publication includes both financial and non-financial data covering a range of activities including housing standards, pollution and noise control and licensing.
